One of the first things you may hear when you start a business is that you need to grow your email list. Easier said than done.

Offer Advice

Everybody needs advice. Share with your subscribers some of your own expert knowledge. What has being a pro in your industry taught you? Share some hacks and tips they can use to up their game.

You can even branch out from this to include some #lifehacks you’ve picked up throughout your journey. For example: maybe you’re a mom working from home. Think about what kind of parenting hacks can you share with your subscribers that will make them see you as a human and remember you when they need what you offer.

Talk About You

A great way to intrigue your audience and to help them get to know a little bit more about you is to share some stories about yourself. Try to share ones you think might be relatable to your audience. Talk about cornerstones in your life that they may also have experienced -- like the day you got married, started your business, had a baby, etc.

People also love to talk about their “firsts.” Tell the story about the first time you drove a car or the first sales call you’ve ever been on. Most people can relate to these instances, and because you share these stories they’ll find you more relatable too.

Ask for Participation

One of the best ways to get your subscribers to click on your emails is to engage with them. You can come up with a variety of activities at a relatively low - or even free - cost. People love participating in anything from polls to contests to free personality quizzes. (Just notice how popular Buzzfeed is for their quizzes!)

Fun Fact: Readers like lists. We like to have our information organized in a nice, neat, numbered list that is easy for our eyes to browse. Try phrasing your subject line like, “15 of the Best Places to Visit This Year,” or “25 of the Weirdest Christmas Foods in History.”

Happy Birthday!

Surprise your subscribers by wishing them a happy birthday! You can set up an automated emailing system to automatically send them an email on their birthday. This will help your subscribers feel less like they’re not just another person on your email list and more like they personally matter to you. You can also try sending a freebie as a “birthday gift” to brighten up their day.

If you need help getting started by creating a freebie and deciding on an email platform to use, I have a free guide that will help you do just that.
