Where to Start Creating Content for Your Website

Raise your hand if you start hyperventilating at the thought of writing content for your website!

I’ve hyperventilated before-- not at the thought of writing content or else I’d be out of a job. I hyperventilated because I was sprinting outside in the snow, in the middle of winter, during track practice.

The feeling was overwhelming. I couldn’t breathe! When you can’t breathe, how do you not panic? Panicking was my first instinct as a 16-year-old girl. I froze where I was standing and made loud, heaving noises as I gasped for air (ugh).

The coach showed up, looked me in the eyes, and told me to breathe in my nose and out my mouth. I kept heaving a couple more times as I tried to tell him I couldn’t breathe.

Didn’t he get it? I was DYING here! He told me again to breathe in my nose and out my mouth and eventually, I forced myself to do it.

And whattaya know, I started breathing like a normal person again.

How does this relate to writing content for your website?

Because if you are frozen in fear or overwhelm at the thought of writing the content and you don’t know where to start, start by doing the first most important thing.

The equivalent to breathing in your nose with regards to your website copy is creating a layout.

Yep. The most important thing at the very beginning doesn’t include writing any sentences at all! Once you have the “skeleton” outlined, then the rest of the content can start to fill in the empty spaces. If you know what your business is and what you’re selling, you can create an outline of the website.

Let’s pretend you are a business coach. Your framework might start out looking as simple as this:

Sometimes this is all you need to get the ball rolling! A blinking cursor on a blank page can be so INTIMIDATING. But once you get these few words on the page, it’s not blank anymore and you can start to fill it in.

Personally, I branch it out as far as I can as an outline before I write any real sentences.

For example:

WORK WITH ME

  • Basic Package

    • Group program

      • 10 people per group

    • Meet once per week via Zoom

    • 6 weeks long

  • Common Package

    • Small group program

      • 5 people per group

    • Meet once per week via Zoom

    • 6 weeks long

  • Premium Package

    • One on one

    • 24/7 access to the coach via text/call

    • 12 weeks long

Then add more and more and watch the content take shape! Maybe I’m the only one but I think this process is so fun. I love building pages and pages of content out of nothing.

If you still feel like you need a paper bag, schedule a call with me. A 15-minute discovery call is free and maybe talking it out will help unravel any of the confusing strands in your mind! I’m here to listen and offer advice and of course, write the content for you if you just want it out of your hair!
