What to Do When Your Family Doesn't Support Your Business

I saw this posted in a Facebook group the other day and wanted to discuss it with you…

family doesn't support business

First, I want to acknowledge that I get it. You started a business and are SUPER excited about it and share about it constantly on social media.

Let's be honest, you probably thought your family would be your first customer, so posting on social media daily is a hint, hint to them to buy from you.

But then days and weeks go by – your family stops “liking” your posts and you feel hurt because you're not making any sales.

It feels like you're family isn't supporting you.

So you post less and throw shade at your family because they didn't want to buy what you were selling.

Your family doesn’t want to buy what you are selling.

And that's why they haven't purchased from you! It's not that they don't love you and want to support you! Your family is probably not your ideal client so they don't have a reason to buy what you're selling.

For example, if your dad is a barber and you just started selling flour, don't waste your time trying to sell to your dad when there is a baker down the street!

Not only that, your family probably doesn't know how to support you without buying from you. They may not have been in this situation before.

The best way to get their support is to ask for it 🙂

Offer some ways that they could support you:

  • Share your posts

  • Tag their friends in the post that may need what you're selling

  • Give them papers or business cards to share when they're out

  • Ask them to share your freebie

  • Have them read over your email before you send it or a post before you post it

And if they don't do it, don't let it get to you. You decided to create your business – they didn't. They may not even understand what you do. (No one in my family understands what copywriting is.) My suggestion is not to advertise to your family – seek out your ideal clients and advertise to them instead.

Walk down the hypothetical street, past the barbershop, and into the bakery with your bags of flour. Find out where the people are that need what you're selling.

Your customers will be happy to have what you offer, you'll be making more money, and your family will be off the hook!

It's a win, win, win!
