Organizing my Energy into What Matters Most

 

The last time I sent an email to my list it said this:

I’m not gonna lie, the next couple of weeks are going to test me and exhaust me. I have a lot coming up that will put to practice my ability to manage my time effectively. (I'll let you know how it turns out.)

That was in July. It’s safe to say that I've been tested repeatedly and exhausted since then. I had to let some things go that I just couldn't take the time to do – like my weekly emails, unfortunately.

The good news is that I learned very quickly which things are the most important to get done and dropped the things that were just distractions.

I have only done the “money-making” things over the past few months. If I had to spend my time on something, it had better be making me money! Otherwise, I didn't waste my energy.

Some people have a lot of energy. They can get up early, go all day, switch gears to a bunch of different projects, and hold conversations all day long. They're the ones we look up to on Instagram and thrive to be like!

But in reality, a lot of us have lower energy.

Not being an energizer bunny is not a bad thing. I know I can feel guilty for being beat by 4 pm just because I've had to talk to people all day. But I'm not an extrovert or capable of being productive all day long at a million different things. Once I admitted that, my life got easier. The pressure lessened.

I shortened my to-do list and crossed off the things that were energy-sucks and not doing me any favors.

Not only did I shorten my to-do list, but I also reorganized it. I only work on certain things each day rather than a little of everything every day. Switching gears requires a lot of energy and I can do it like, one time before I'm cooked.

So now I only work on one thing every day. Even if I'm done and still have energy, I don't move on to another project. If it’s not on my list for that day, I won’t do it. I'm working on not feeling guilty for relaxing and reading a book or going for a walk rather than feeling like I should use the energy to do laundry or clean the house.

I'm going to resume sending emails to my list (and posting blogs) but not as often as before. Realistically, I’ll send emails maybe once a month — same with the blogs.
